Why Plant Care Advice Contradicts Itself

Look up how to care for a single plant — say, a monstera — and within ten minutes you'll have collected a small pile of flatly contradictory instructions. Water every seven days. Never water on a schedule. It loves bright light. Direct sun will scorch it. Mist it daily. Misting does nothing.
It's tempting to conclude that plant people are making it up. They mostly aren't. Almost every piece of care advice is a conditional statement that lost its conditions somewhere on the way to being repeated — a true answer to a question about a specific plant, in a specific pot, in a specific room, in a specific month.
Every rule of thumb has the conditions stripped off
"Water your pothos once a week" is shorthand. The full sentence is something like: water your pothos once a week if it's in a six-inch plastic pot of peat-based mix, three feet from an east window, in a 70°F room in June. Change any one of those and the number changes with it. Put the same plant in terracotta and it dries out noticeably faster; move it into a dim corner in January and a weekly soak becomes a slow drowning.
The person who wrote the advice wasn't being careless. They were compressing five variables into one number because a number is what people ask for. The trouble is that the number travels and the variables don't.
This is why two experienced growers can give you opposite instructions and both be right. They're describing their own homes, accurately.
"Bright indirect light" is four different places
Light advice conflicts more than any other kind, and the reason isn't disagreement about plants. It's that the phrase everyone reaches for describes a measurement almost nobody takes. Human eyes are hopeless light meters — pupils adjust constantly, so a spot that reads as bright to you and a spot that reads as bright to someone two time zones away can differ by an order of magnitude while earning the same three words.
The spread is genuinely that wide. Move a plant about three feet back from a bright window and it can lose roughly half the light it was getting. Sit it eight to ten feet away and even a south-facing window is delivering low-light conditions. A south or west window right at the glass can run in the hundreds to a couple of thousand foot-candles; a north or east window works with a far more modest share of that.
So when two people tell you opposite things about the same plant's light, they may both be describing "a bright spot near the window" — and be describing environments with nothing in common. The phrase survived the trip between their homes. The conditions didn't.
A watering interval belongs to the pot, not the plant
Watering frequency is the most-asked and least-transferable number in plant care, and it helps to see why: the interval isn't a property of the plant at all. It's an output of the whole system — species, pot size, pot material, soil mix, drainage, light, temperature, humidity. The plant is one input out of eight, which makes "how often should I water this?" a bit like asking a stranger how long their commute is and then setting your alarm by it.
A chunky aroid mix in a small terracotta pot in a sunny window might genuinely need water twice a week. The identical plant in dense peat, in an oversized glazed pot with no drainage hole, in a north-facing bedroom, might go three weeks and still be too wet. Neither owner is wrong. Neither one's number is any use to the other.
Which is also why the advice that does travel between homes is always phrased as a condition rather than a count. "When the top couple of inches are dry" isn't a folksier way of saying "every seven days" — it's the durable version of the same instruction, because it names the state the plant actually responds to instead of a number that only held true in one room.
Whose winter are we talking about?
Seasonal advice suffers the same problem, one layer up. Most popular houseplants — pothos, monstera, philodendron, calathea, ferns, peace lilies — come from places where the air sits somewhere around 70–90% relative humidity. In a heated home in winter, indoor humidity commonly falls to around 20–30%, and can dip lower. That's not a small adjustment; it's a different planet, and it's the reason crispy leaf tips arrive every January like clockwork.
But "winter" isn't a universal condition either. A mild, damp coastal winter with the heating barely on is a completely different season, plant-wise, from a dry continental one with forced air running nonstop. Advice written for one reads as reckless in the other.
Care guides also tend to be written by people who grow plants very well — often growers whose greenhouses run at light and humidity levels no living room will ever reach. That advice is accurate and still not directly applicable, which is a frustrating combination to encounter when your plant is dropping leaves.
How to translate any advice to your home
The practical move is to stop collecting instructions and start converting them. When you read a frequency, mentally turn it back into a condition: "water weekly" becomes "this plant likes the top couple of inches to dry out before the next drink." The condition travels; the number doesn't.
Then measure the two variables you're most likely to be wrong about, rather than inheriting someone's estimate of them. Check your light with a meter — an app, or the one built into Leaf Scan — and be ready for the answer that your "bright" corner is a low-light spot. And check the soil itself before each watering instead of the calendar. Those two habits dissolve most contradictory advice on their own, because they swap out someone else's conditions for yours.
Finally, change one thing at a time and give it a few weeks. If you move a struggling plant, repot it, and start fertilizing in the same afternoon, you've learned nothing about which one helped — and if it declines, you won't know which to undo. Plants respond slowly enough that patience is a diagnostic tool, not just a virtue.
Contradictory advice stops being maddening once you read it as what it is: a lot of people describing their own windowsills, honestly. Your job isn't to find the one true answer. It's to figure out which of those windowsills is closest to yours.
