How to Propagate Houseplants by Leaf-Bud Cuttings
A leaf-bud cutting uses a single leaf, its stem, and the bud at its base to grow a full new plant — here's how to do it reliably.
Most houseplant propagation guides focus on stem tip cuttings or water rooting, but leaf-bud cuttings are a lesser-known method that can be surprisingly productive — especially when your plant doesn't have long stems to spare. A leaf-bud cutting includes a single leaf, its petiole (the short stalk connecting leaf to stem), and a small sliver of the main stem that holds an axillary bud. That bud is the key: without it, a leaf might produce roots but will never generate new shoots, leaving you with a rooted leaf that slowly dies without ever becoming an independent plant.
This technique works well on a handful of popular houseplants — particularly rubbery-stemmed plants like rubber plants, hoyas, and heartleaf philodendrons — and it's a smart way to multiply a cherished specimen without removing whole branches. The process asks for patience (expect four to ten weeks before you see new growth), a clean cut, and a consistently warm, humid environment. Get those three things right and you'll have a strong new plant on your hands.

- 1Choose a healthy leaf with a visible axillary bud
Select a mature, undamaged leaf on your parent plant. Look at the crook where the leaf's stem meets the main stem — you should see a small, firm nub sitting right in that joint. That is the axillary bud. Avoid very young leaves at the growing tip (their buds are immature) and very old leaves at the base of the plant (buds may be dormant or dead). A middle-aged leaf in good health is your best bet.

Which plants respond well to leaf-bud cuttings
Not every houseplant can be propagated this way. The method works best on species that have a distinct axillary bud sitting in the junction between each leaf petiole and the main stem.
Good candidates include: rubber plant (Ficus elastica), heartleaf philodendron, pothos (including golden pothos and satin pothos), hoya (such as Hoya carnosa), inch plant, arrowhead plant, and philodendron brasil and birkin cultivars.
Plants that do not work well for this method include monstera deliciosa and monstera adansonii (they root from nodes but the bud situation is more complex), most succulents and cacti (leaf cuttings for those follow a different logic — see the succulent propagation guide), orchids, and air plants, which reproduce through entirely different mechanisms.
If you are unsure whether your plant has visible axillary buds, look closely at the joint where a leaf stem meets the main stem. A tiny green or brownish nub sitting right in that crook is the bud you need to include in your cutting.
What you need before you start
Sharp, clean cutting tool — a single-edge razor blade or a fine-bladed pruning knife works better than scissors, which can crush stem tissue. Wipe the blade with rubbing alcohol before use.
Small nursery pots or 4-inch containers with drainage holes. Clear plastic cups work too and let you watch for roots.
Propagation medium — a 50/50 mix of perlite and coconut coir holds moisture while staying airy enough to prevent rot. You can also use straight perlite moistened with water. Avoid heavy potting soil, which stays too wet and promotes rot before roots are established.
A humidity dome or a clear plastic bag large enough to tent over your cutting without touching the leaf. Consistent humidity dramatically improves success rates.
Optional but helpful: rooting hormone powder or gel (containing indole-3-butyric acid, or IBA). It is not strictly necessary for the easier species, but it speeds things up noticeably on rubber plants and hoyas.

How to read a successful cut vs. a failed one
The difference between a cutting that roots and one that rots often comes down to exactly what tissue you took.
A good leaf-bud cutting includes: the full leaf blade, the petiole intact, and a 'heel' of main stem about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide that clearly contains the bud. The bud is nonfunctional if it is not attached to at least a small sliver of stem.
A common mistake is taking only the leaf and petiole — no stem tissue. These cuttings can callus and may even produce a few roots, but they will never push out a new shoot. After a few months of hopeful waiting, the leaf yellows and dies. Including the bud-bearing heel of stem is what separates a leaf-bud cutting from a simple leaf cutting.
Another failure mode is a cut that's too wide — hacking off a large chunk of the parent stem to get the bud. You only need a thin, shallow slice, not a full stem section. Taking too much unnecessarily wounds the parent plant.
If your cutting is from a milky-sapped plant like a rubber plant or dumb cane, let the cut end sit in open air for 10–15 minutes after cutting so the sap can form a light skin before you apply rooting hormone or place the cutting in medium. Wash your hands after handling the sap.
Keeping cuttings healthy while they root
Once your cutting is in its propagation medium, place the humidity dome or plastic bag over it. You want moisture in the air around the leaf, but the dome should not be completely sealed — leave a small gap or open it for 10–15 minutes each day to prevent mold buildup.
Place the pot in bright, indirect light. Direct sun will overheat the cutting and dry it out faster than roots can develop. A spot a few feet from an east- or west-facing window is ideal.
Check moisture levels every few days. The medium should feel like a wrung-out sponge — damp throughout but never soggy. If it dries out, mist the surface or add a small amount of water around the edge of the pot, not directly on the cutting base.
Watch for fungal issues. White fuzzy growth on the stem base or medium surface is mold, often a sign of too much moisture and not enough airflow. Remove the affected cutting material gently, let things dry slightly, and ventilate the dome more often.
Resist the urge to tug on the cutting to test for roots. Instead, watch for a clear signal: new growth pushing out from the bud at the base of the leaf. Once you see that tiny new leaf or shoot emerging, roots are almost certainly present. At that point you can gently tip the cutting out to confirm, then pot it up into regular potting mix.
Troubleshooting common problems
Leaf yellows and falls off without any new growth: The bud was not included, or it was damaged during cutting. Unfortunately this cutting will not recover into a new plant. Start again with fresh material and double-check that you can see the small bud nub on the stem sliver before you plant it.
Cutting looks healthy for weeks but no bud movement: This is normal and not a sign of failure — some species, especially hoyas, take eight to twelve weeks before the bud stirs. As long as the leaf is firm and green and the cutting does not wobble loosely (which would suggest rot at the base), keep waiting.
Base of cutting turns soft and brown: Root rot from excessive moisture. Remove the cutting, trim away any mushy tissue with a clean blade, dust the fresh cut with a little cinnamon (a mild antifungal) or powdered sulfur, and replant in fresh, drier medium.
Roots present but no bud growth after three months: Rare but possible if the bud was nonviable. The cutting has reached a dead end. You can keep it if you like — a rooted leaf in a pot of soil is not harmful — but it will not develop into a full plant.
New shoot appears but is very small and pale: Normal for the first few weeks. Move the cutting to slightly brighter light once the new shoot has at least one fully expanded leaf, and begin diluted fertilizing about a month after potting up into regular soil.
- Take two or three cuttings at once — propagation success is never guaranteed, and having backups is the single most effective way to end up with at least one new plant.
- Bottom heat speeds rooting noticeably. A seedling heat mat set to 72–75°F under the pot can cut rooting time by a week or two, especially for rubber plants and hoyas.
- Label each cutting with the date you took it. When you are waiting eight to twelve weeks, it is easy to lose track of how long a cutting has actually been in progress — and this prevents you from giving up too early.
- The parent plant's wound is a small wound too. After cutting, dust the exposed spot on the parent stem lightly with powdered cinnamon or simply keep the plant in a clean, well-ventilated spot while it calluses over.
- Do not fertilize actively propagating cuttings. Roots need to develop first; fertilizer applied before roots are established can chemically burn the fragile new tissue.
FAQ
Can I propagate a pothos or philodendron with just a leaf and no stem piece?
A leaf alone will not produce a new plant on these species. Pothos and philodendrons root from nodes — the small bumps on the stem — and the axillary bud sits right at the node. Without at least a sliver of stem containing that node and bud, the leaf may callus and even grow a few roots, but it has no tissue capable of generating new shoots. Always include a small heel of stem when taking a leaf-bud cutting.
How long does a leaf-bud cutting take to root?
It depends on the species and conditions. Easy-rooting plants like heartleaf philodendron and pothos often show bud movement and roots within three to five weeks at 72–78°F. Rubber plants typically take six to eight weeks. Hoyas are the slowest of the common candidates — eight to twelve weeks is normal, and some varieties take even longer. Consistent warmth and humidity are the biggest factors you can control.
Do I need a humidity dome the whole time?
For the first four to six weeks, yes — the dome helps the leaf stay turgid while the cutting has no roots to take up water. Once you see clear new growth from the bud, you can start venting the dome for longer periods each day over the course of a week, gradually weaning the cutting off the extra humidity before removing the dome entirely.
The leaf on my cutting is drooping badly. Is it dying?
Some drooping is normal in the first few days, since the cutting has no roots yet and can't take up water efficiently. If the leaf firms back up after a day or two under the humidity dome, things are on track. If it continues to collapse and the petiole turns soft or mushy, the cutting is likely rotting at the base. Inspect the stem heel — if it is brown and wet, trim away the damaged tissue, dust with cinnamon, and replant in fresh medium.
Can I take multiple leaf-bud cuttings from the same plant at once?
Yes, but be thoughtful about how many you take. Removing several leaves from one stem at once can set the parent plant back, particularly if it is small or already stressed. A good rule of thumb is to take no more than one cutting per every four to five leaves on a given stem, and avoid taking cuttings from a plant that is actively recovering from repotting, pest treatment, or underwatering.
