Soil Staying Wet Too Long

Potting mix stays soggy for days after watering, smells musty, and the plant shows yellowing, drooping, or stunted growth.

When potting soil takes longer than a few days to dry out, your plant's roots are spending far too much time sitting in saturated conditions. Roots need both water and oxygen to function, and waterlogged soil drives out the air pockets they rely on. Over time, oxygen-starved roots lose their ability to take up water and nutrients — which is deeply ironic, since the plant will begin to show the same stressed, wilted appearance as an underwatered one, even though the soil is soaking wet.

Persistently wet soil is one of the most common underlying causes of houseplant decline, and it rarely has just one cause. A pot that's too large, a mix that's too dense, low light, cool temperatures, or a lack of drainage holes can each slow drying on their own — and in combination they create conditions where root rot is almost inevitable. The good news is that once you identify why the soil isn't drying out, the fix is usually straightforward.

What causes it

Pot is too large for the plant

Potting mix is too dense or water-retentive

Heavy mixes — particularly cheap, peat-heavy all-purpose soils or mixes designed for outdoor gardens — compact over time and hold far more water than most houseplant roots can handle. Plants like succulents, cacti, orchids, and aroids need fast-draining mixes amended with perlite, bark, or coarse sand to allow excess water to move through quickly.

Plants growing in low light photosynthesize slowly, which means they drink water slowly too. Cool indoor temperatures — especially in winter near windows or on tile floors — also dramatically slow evaporation from the soil and reduce the plant's metabolic rate. A combination of low light and cold can keep soil wet for a week or more after even a modest watering.

No drainage hole, or drainage hole is blocked

Without a drainage hole, excess water simply pools at the bottom of the pot beneath the root zone. Roots eventually grow down into this standing water and suffocate. Even pots that do have drainage holes can become blocked by compacted soil, a layer of gravel, or roots growing into the hole — all of which trap water just as effectively.
